Dawarich Reviews

Privacy and data ownership: Dawarich says your data is not used for ads, not sold, and can be kept on your own server if self-hosted.

Self-hosting: You can run it on your own hardware for full control, and the code is open source so it can be inspected.

Long-term retention: It is designed to keep location history forever instead of the shorter retention used by Google Timeline.

Useful visualizations: It supports maps, heatmaps, trip timelines, statistics, and journaling-style views of your movement history.

Import/export flexibility: It supports importing data such as Google Takeout and other location formats, and offers one-click export in multiple formats.

Good fit for privacy-conscious users: Reviews and comparisons consistently frame it as a strong alternative to Google Timeline, Life360, and similar services for people who want data sovereignty.

Technical overhead: Self-hosting requires setup and maintenance, including Docker, backups, and server configuration.

Not ideal for non-technical users: It is not a plug-and-play consumer app in the way mainstream mobile apps are.

Limited scope: It is focused on location history, so it does not try to be a full family-safety or general-purpose lifestyle platform.

Missing some Google Timeline features: One noted gap is direct geotagging of photos in the phone gallery.

Active development risk: One analysis warns about frequent breaking changes and says it is not a good fit for mission-critical deployments without extra hardening.

Mobile app limitations: A user review notes the mobile app may be less useful for viewing family members’ current and past history, with web access needed for that.
